Why Low-Calorie Diets Fail Have you ever attempted to lose weight by reducing your calorie intake? Was it successful in the long run? Could you maintain your weight loss? If you’re reading this, chances are it didn’t, and you’re not alone. According to UK data, 1 in 124 obese women achieves results using this method, implying that the nutrition guidelines followed by some professionals have a 99.5 percent failure rate. A quick Google search of what happened to the contestants on the popular television show “The Biggest Loser” should suffice to dissuade you from attempting this method. This show is a textbook example of why increasing physical activity and consuming fewer calories only works in the short term, if at all. There is a reason for the rarity of reunion concerts. Therefore, why are low-calorie diets ineffective? Six years after the show’s filming concluded, a study of 14 contestants revealed some alarming results. Although the initial results were impressive, as the study demonstrated, they were fleeting. The following table summarizes the results of several of the factors examined.

Prior to filming, the average weight was 328 lb/148 kg.
After 30 weeks on the show, the average weight is 199 lb/90 kg.
Six years after graduation, the average weight is 290 lb/131 kg.
